The Federal Government has introduced a new programme to help reduce adult illiteracy and provide practical skills for Nigerians.

The initiative, launched by the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC), is called the Staff-Led Literacy Facilitation Initiative (NSLFI). It will involve NMEC staff setting up and running literacy centres in communities where many people lack basic education.

The programme will begin in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and nearby areas, with a goal of reaching about 300,000 youths and adults. Staff volunteers will teach in places such as community centres, markets, workplaces, and religious gatherings.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of NMEC, Prof. Garba Maitasfir, represented by Dr. John Edeh, said illiteracy remains a major challenge to national development, economic growth, and social equality. He stressed the need for urgent action to improve literacy levels.

The programme will focus on raising awareness among community leaders, women, and young people. It will also involve setting up literacy and vocational centres, providing learning materials, and training staff on how to teach adults effectively, including digital skills.

In addition to basic reading and writing, the initiative will teach useful skills such as digital literacy, financial education, health awareness, and vocational training.

The goal is to help people gain practical knowledge they can use in their daily lives and contribute to national development.
