The event also featured the unveiling of the “Adopt-a-School” platform under the initiative, designed to enable government institutions, private sector organisations, and development partners to directly support school feeding efforts and expand its reach nationwide.
The Federal Government has launched “Snacks for Thought” (PBAT FEEDS), a strategic breakfast initiative under the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (RH-NHGSFP), aimed at improving learning outcomes through better child nutrition.
The initiative provides nutritious morning meals to pupils before the start of academic activities, tackling one of the most critical barriers to learning, hunger.
Speaking at the launch held at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in Abuja, the National Programme Manager of RH-NHGSFP, Dr Princess Aderemi F. Adebowale, described the initiative as a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s human capital development.
“The more developed your knowledge base is, the smarter you are — but you cannot be smarter than your knowledge base,” she said.
Adebowale noted that “Snacks for Thought” goes beyond a feeding intervention, describing it as a national development strategy that integrates nutrition, education, and productivity.
She said: “The programme is expected to improve student concentration and cognitive performance, increase school attendance and retention, strengthen local agricultural value chains through structured procurement, and empower women, youth, and smallholder farmers.
“Today, Nigeria made a decision that no child should sit in a classroom hungry; that learning must begin with nourishment; and that the future of this nation will no longer be built on empty stomachs.

“With the launch of ‘Snacks for Thought’, Nigeria is investing not just in food but in focus, knowledge, and the future. Because a hungry child cannot learn, and a nation that ignores this cannot develop. This is more than a programme; it is a commitment.”
The event also featured the unveiling of the “Adopt-a-School” platform under the initiative, designed to enable government institutions, private sector organisations, and development partners to directly support school feeding efforts and expand its reach nationwide.
The launch attracted ministers, members of the National Assembly, Directors-General, Managing Directors, development partners, and other key stakeholders, reflecting strong institutional backing and national alignment.
School children, seen holding their meal packs, formed the centrepiece of the event, symbolising a shift in national priorities towards nutrition-driven education and inclusive development.
“Snacks for Thought” complements the existing school feeding programme by ensuring children are nourished at the start of the school day, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of classroom learning.
The initiative underscores Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable human capital development, recognising that national growth begins with the health, nutrition, and cognitive capacity of its children.
The Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme remains a flagship social investment initiative focused on improving child nutrition, strengthening education outcomes, and supporting local agricultural systems across the country.
