The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has resigned from office, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure amid mounting political tension in the state.

Gwarzo’s resignation was confirmed on Friday by his spokesperson and associates, who said the decision had been formally communicated, although detailed reasons were not immediately disclosed.

However, multiple sources indicate that the development is closely linked to an ongoing impeachment process initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly over allegations including gross misconduct, abuse of office and breach of public trust.

The Assembly had earlier issued a notice of impeachment and reportedly gave the deputy governor a two-week ultimatum to respond to the allegations.

In a statement released by the Kwankwasiyya Movement, political allies of the embattled deputy governor said the resignation was taken “in the overall interest of the people” and to preserve stability in governance.

The group insisted that the decision should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing, stressing that Gwarzo maintains his innocence despite the allegations levelled against him.

Sources further noted that the resignation may help defuse rising political tension in the state, which has been grappling with internal realignments and friction between key actors in recent weeks.

Gwarzo, who assumed office in May 2023 alongside Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, is expected to be replaced in line with constitutional provisions requiring the nomination and confirmation of a new deputy governor.
