CAF, FIFA praise DR Congo after World Cup qualification

Quick Read

Fans across DR Congo have expressed their joy and excitement, seeing this qualification as a historic moment that brings pride to the nation.

FIFA and Confederation of African Football have both congratulated the Democratic Republic of Congo for qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, one of the most prestigious events in international football.

DR Congo secured their place in the tournament after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff final, held on Wednesday morning.

The winning goal came from Axel Tuanzebe, who emerged as the hero of the match and ensured that the Leopards would join the other top teams from Africa in the global competition.

This achievement marks only the second time that DR Congo will appear at a World Cup.

Their first appearance was more than 50 years ago, in 1974, when the country competed under its former name, Zaire. The long wait has made this qualification even more special for fans and players alike.

CAF celebrated the team’s accomplishment on X, writing, “52 years later. The return was worth the run. Already proud, DRC.” Similarly, FIFA expressed its excitement and recognition of the team’s hard work, stating, “Dreams unlocked. Congo DR are going to the #FIFAWorldCup.”

Before reaching the final against Jamaica, DR Congo had faced a tense match against Nigeria, winning 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

That dramatic victory gave them the momentum to advance to the intercontinental playoff final and ultimately secure their spot at the 2026 tournament.

Fans across DR Congo have expressed their joy and excitement, seeing this qualification as a historic moment that brings pride to the nation.

As the team prepares for the World Cup, expectations are high for them to showcase African football on the world stage once again.
