Portuguese forward João Félix has spoken candidly about his departure from Chelsea, insisting he holds no regrets despite describing Stamford Bridge as a “top club” where he felt genuinely happy.

In comments reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 26-year-old said: “I was happy at Chelsea, it’s a top club but I had to do what felt right for me. The World Cup spot was also crucial. World Cups come around every four years and I wasn’t playing, but I still enjoyed my time at Chelsea.”

Félix’s remarks come as he continues to thrive at Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, where he joined on a permanent two-year deal from Chelsea in July 2025 for an initial fee of around €30 million (potentially rising to €50 million with add-ons).

The move followed an earlier loan spell at AC Milan and a second stint at Chelsea, where he struggled for consistent minutes despite the club’s significant investment in him.

The attacking midfielder/forward’s decision was heavily influenced by the approaching 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

With regular first-team football scarce at Chelsea, Félix prioritised securing his place in Portugal’s national team squad under manager Roberto Martínez.

Playing regularly alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr has reportedly boosted both his form and his prospects for this summer’s tournament.

Félix’s career has been marked by high expectations since his record-breaking €126 million move from Benfica to Atlético Madrid in 2019.

Subsequent loans at Chelsea (2023), Barcelona, and AC Milan highlighted his talent but also his difficulty in finding a long-term home where he could consistently shine. His return to Chelsea in 2024 for approximately £45 million raised hopes of stability, yet limited opportunities ultimately prompted the switch to Saudi Arabia.

At Al-Nassr, Félix has enjoyed a more prominent role, contributing significantly in attack and appearing revitalised in a system that allows greater freedom.

As the 2026 World Cup draws closer, Félix’s focus remains on performing at club level to cement his international spot.
