“Do Something,” by olaniyi innocent omolola popularly known as Kurrious, is an Afrobeats sensation that reminds me of the tit-for-tat pop culture in the dating pool sites, especially. The song starts with a reverberation, which adds some unusual sonic flavor to the intro. The percussion is sharp and laced with punchy kicks, also aided by the piano chords and the strumming guitar strings. Kurrious’ ad-libs at about the 0:15 mark before the full scale of the beat prepares the song and also showcases his vocal range and strength.
Kurrious, the artist is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, vocalist and composer. This song, “Do Something,” produced, mixed and mastered by Princeton Beatz, is one of his curated masterpieces. Exposing the ritual of “doing (showing proof)” before “doing” anything with a lady, Kurrious breaks the back of the carmel by showing a part of the female gender’s vulnerability and the other indirectly linked issues of a crumbling society. “Do something… drop something before you start to dey chop something” are lyrics that form the premise of this sonic blow.
At about the 0:18 mark of the song, Kurrious fully starts with a Yoruba proverb, “Obè tó dùn, owó ló pá,” meaning a tasty soup is expensive. He continues to directly explain that a beautiful girl is a result of expensive care, which embeds in it an iota of truth. At about the 0:36 mark of the song, he switched to the chorus, which gives a deeper, but mind-decluttering meaning as he reveals that a girl said she needs tosee “some proof of care and love” with obviously some of his money before they can start dating.
Kurrious totally changes his tone with his calm and beautiful responses from the 0:54 mark of the song. Here he adores the girl’s body shape and charm and later wishes to give it to her, which at that point makes the listeners confused about his tone and view of the girl’s request. Ordinarily, love should be natural and from both sides, but the current happenings among Nigerian youths, especially, making it transactional and messier give Kurrious’ listeners no thinking cap.
“I will take you round the world…” a popular lovey-dovey line in Afrobeats love songs especially makes the listeners catch Kurrious’ ultimate love for this girl, even as he boasts, “…awa o ma kin se talika…” Up till the 2:28 mark, Kurriousshowers praises on his estranged lover, and the chorus gets repeated till the 3:00 mark of the song.
With his use of the English language, Yoruba, and Pidgin, Kurrious makes his song, “Do Something,” more relatable to his audience. His opening of the song with a Yoruba proverb also gives deeper knowledge. His sonorous voice syncs with his love expression, and his choice of words really touched the heart of the listener.
The mixing and mastering of this song, done by Princeton Beatz, gives the song more essence. From the 3:01 mark of the song till the end, the strumming magnificence of the guitars, the playing of piano chords, and again, the percussion all add sweetness to the outro of the song. Apart from his confusion at the start of the song, if Kurrious were a serious lover boy, his love song would have been more deepened with an instrument like the sax or violin.
Kurrious gave his heart on “Do Something.” His confusing moves at first make his listeners lose their thoughts for some moments, but his consistent praise of this girl makes his intentions clear. His voice, the mixing and mastering of the song, and the general production all come together well. While he brings in his wit and lyrics, confusion shouldn’t be a part as he splits the attention span of the listeners. Kurriouskeeps making sound and his moves towards the crest in the industry.
