Benneth Chukwuemeke Oteh, a seasoned operations geologist and project leader, has been named the 2024 recipient of the prestigious Dratech Operational Innovation Excellence Award, in recognition of his exceptional operational leadership, execution discipline, and sustained professional contributions.

Reflecting on the honour, he shared, “I am deeply humbled and thrilled to receive this award. It is a culmination of decades of commitment, hard work, and the shared efforts of every team I have had the privilege to lead. This recognition inspires me to continue pushing the boundaries of operational excellence.”

With over 20 years of experience spanning Nigeria, Uganda, and international assignments in France, Benneth Chukwuemeke Oteh has consistently demonstrated a rare combination of technical expertise, strategic insight, and disciplined execution.

Currently serving as Lead Operations Geologist at TotalEnergies in Kampala, Uganda, he oversees the planning and execution of complex drilling projects, mentors trainee geologists, coordinates geosteering for horizontal wells, and ensures compliance with stringent health, safety, and environmental standards.

“Mentoring young geologists and seeing them succeed has always been deeply rewarding,” he says. “This award reminds me that investing in people is as important as delivering projects.”

His career achievements are extensive. As Manager of Geology Operations in Lagos, Nigeria, he led large-scale deepwater drilling programmes, managed geological services contracts, and spearheaded cost optimisation initiatives that realised $3.1 million in savings between 2018 and 2020.

He highlights, “Receiving recognition for these efforts is particularly meaningful because it reflects not only operational success but the ability to balance efficiency, safety, and innovation.”

Earlier in his career, he served as Head of Operations Geology in Port Harcourt, where he planned and safely delivered multiple offshore development wells and coordinated geosteering operations in challenging reservoirs.

He also contributed internationally as Senior Geopressure Geologist in France, conducting pore pressure studies for exploration and appraisal wells across countries such as Egypt, Brunei, Myanmar, and Brazil.

“Every project, whether local or international, presented unique challenges and learning opportunities,” he notes. “This award encapsulates the journey of facing those challenges, learning, and consistently delivering results.”

Benneth Chukwuemeke Oteh’s educational credentials include an M.Sc. in Entrepreneurship and Innovation from Rome Business School, Italy; an M.Sc. in Petroleum Geoscience from Royal Holloway, University of London; and a B.Sc. (Hons) in Geology from the University of Benin, Nigeria.

Complementing his academic foundation, his CV highlights specialised skills in drilling project management, geological data acquisition, contracts oversight, pore pressure prediction, cost control, and team leadership.

He emphasises, “Education and continuous learning have been vital, but so has applying that knowledge in real-world operations where safety, accuracy, and efficiency matter.”

Beyond technical competence, he has built a reputation for mentorship, coaching, and team development.

“I feel the greatest sense of fulfillment when those I mentor achieve excellence,” he says. “The award is as much a celebration of their efforts as it is mine. Operational excellence is a team sport, and I am proud to have contributed to building capable, confident professionals.”

Benneth Chukwuemeke Oteh’s career exemplifies these qualities. From supervising wellsite operations to planning and executing large-scale offshore projects, his work has consistently delivered tangible results, improved efficiency, and fostered a culture of safety and accountability.

He also shared that the award motivates him to continue striving for excellence. It validates the values he has upheld throughout his career—discipline, precision, mentorship, and innovation.

He hopes it serves as encouragement for others in the industry to pursue operational rigour while investing in people and sustainable practices.
