Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has revealed what he described as the behind-the-scenes dynamics of the #EndSARS protests, shedding light on why Afrobeat superstar Davido eventually distanced himself from the movement.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, Sowore noted that while the movement had identifiable leaders, the government preferred not to have it led by individuals it could not control. “#EndSARS had leaders, but the issue was that the government preferred not to have it led by individuals they couldn’t control,” he said.
Sowore specifically highlighted Davido’s active role in meetings during the protests. However, he explained that the situation changed when Davido traveled to Abuja to meet with former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.
“Davido was present at every #EndSARS meeting. However, when he arrived in Abuja to meet with the IGP, he was informed that they wanted to investigate him regarding the murder of one of his aides. By the time he reached the meeting, he said, ‘I didn’t come to Abuja to protest,’” Sowore added.
The revelation has reignited discussions about the #EndSARS movement, the 2020 campaign aimed at ending police brutality, particularly abuses by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
