The Federal Government (FG) has started discussions with Airbus to buy air ambulance helicopters to improve emergency medical services across Nigeria.
Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, shared the update via the official Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) Coordination Office on Monday.
The plan aims to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system by adding air-based emergency services to existing hospitals and medical facilities.
What the Minister Said
Prof. Pate said the government is exploring air ambulance services as a key part of Nigeria’s emergency response system. He recently visited Airbus facilities in Lyon, France, to assess suitable helicopters.
He explained:
“We are expanding Nigeria’s public health infrastructure, including emergency services, and looking at helicopters that fit our health system, personnel, and sustainable financing models.”
The proposed service will be fully integrated into Nigeria’s healthcare system, focusing on staff training, infrastructure, and long-term funding.
The air ambulance program is expected to help patients with serious conditions like trauma, heart attacks, and strokes by enabling faster transport to well-equipped hospitals.
The Ministry is also working with the aviation sector under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure smooth implementation. Existing programs like the National Emergency Medical Services, Rural Emergency Service, and Maternal Transport program will support the new plan.
This move is part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize aviation and healthcare. In 2024, the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, visited Airbus in France to facilitate aircraft leasing for Nigerian airlines. The Presidency also acquired a new Airbus A330 to replace an old Boeing B737-700.
The talks on air ambulance helicopters show the government’s commitment to using international partnerships to improve healthcare and emergency services in Nigeria.
