Police detain own officers over Ojuelegba misconduct

The Lagos State Police Command has detained several police officers following allegations that they harassed young people and seized their mobile phones at the Ojuelegba Underbridge area of Lagos.

The incident was said to have taken place on Monday night. It later gained public attention after a social media user, identified as @ejylemykel1, shared a post online complaining about the officers’ behaviour.

The post quickly attracted reactions from other users who expressed concern over police misconduct.

According to the complainant, the officers, believed to be members of the Anti-Cultism Squad, were seen stopping youths, questioning them, and forcefully collecting their phones without proper justification.

The user described the situation as a clear case of police harassment and abuse of power.

Reacting to the allegations, the Lagos State Police Command released a statement through its official X (formerly Twitter) account.

The command confirmed that the officers involved had been identified and immediately taken into custody.

The statement explained that the officers were brought before the Commissioner of Police, where their statements were taken as part of the preliminary investigation. Following this, the Commissioner ordered that the officers be detained while a full investigation is carried out to determine what truly happened.

The police also revealed that they have reached out to the complainant, who is expected to report to the command to provide more details and assist investigators with additional information.

This step, according to the police, is important to ensure a fair and thorough investigation.

Furthermore, the command assured members of the public that it takes allegations of misconduct seriously and will not tolerate any form of unprofessional behaviour among its officers.

It emphasized its commitment to accountability and discipline within the force.

The police added that the outcome of the investigation will be made public once it is concluded, urging citizens to remain calm and continue to report any form of wrongdoing by law enforcement officers.
