Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured a commanding 2-0 victory over Liverpool FC in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash, putting themselves in a strong position ahead of the return fixture.
The encounter, played on Wednesday night in Paris, saw the French champions dominate proceedings, converting early pressure into a deserved lead and maintaining control throughout the contest.
PSG opened the scoring in the 11th minute through Desire Doue, who produced a brilliant individual effort, weaving past defenders before firing a shot from the edge of the box that found the net via a slight deflection.
Liverpool struggled to respond to PSG’s intensity, managing limited attacking threat as the hosts controlled possession and dictated the tempo of the game.
The second goal arrived in the 65th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia calmly finished a one-on-one opportunity after being set up by Joao Neves, lifting the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to double PSG’s advantage.
Despite attempts to rally late in the match, Liverpool failed to register a meaningful comeback, with PSG’s defence remaining organised and resilient.
The match also saw moments of controversy, including a penalty appeal for PSG that was overturned following a VAR review, further frustrating the home side’s push for a third goal.
Statistically, PSG’s dominance was evident, outshooting Liverpool significantly and maintaining greater control of key phases of play.
Liverpool manager’s tactical changes, including multiple substitutions in the second half, failed to alter the outcome as PSG continued to press for opportunities.
The result leaves PSG firmly in control of the tie heading into the second leg, while Liverpool face an uphill task to overturn the deficit and keep their Champions League hopes alive.
