Atletico Madrid delivered a disciplined and clinical performance to defeat FC Barcelona 2-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final, putting the Spanish side in firm control ahead of the return fixture.
The encounter, played on Wednesday night, turned decisively in Atletico’s favour late in the first half when Julian Alvarez produced a moment of brilliance, curling a free kick into the top corner to give the visitors the lead.
Barcelona’s task became significantly harder moments later when Pau Cubarsi was sent off following a VAR review, reducing the hosts to 10 men before the break and disrupting their rhythm.
Despite flashes of attacking intent, including efforts from Marcus Rashford and Lamine Yamal, Barcelona struggled to convert possession into clear chances, with Atletico’s defensive organisation proving difficult to break down.
The visitors capitalised on their numerical advantage in the second half, doubling their lead in the 70th minute through Alexander Sorloth, who finished clinically from close range after a well-worked attacking move.
Barcelona pushed for a response, creating a handful of opportunities, but Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso delivered a series of crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet.
The result marks a significant statement from Atletico Madrid, who combined tactical discipline with clinical finishing to silence the home crowd and gain a crucial upper hand in the tie.
For Barcelona, the defeat leaves them facing a daunting challenge in the second leg, needing to overturn a two-goal deficit against a resolute Atletico side.
