The Director General of World Trade Organisation, WTO, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has called for vigorous fight against fraudsters vigorously using names and images of prominent individuals to advertise or sell dubious products and services.
Okonjo-Iweala, a former Nigeria’s Minister of Finance said this on her social media handle while disowning a purported project attributed to her as ‘Ngozi-Iweala’s new project which has already made more than 10,000 Nigerians happy … promising 4600,000 Nigerian naira per week with minimum investment”.
The purported advert for the project, Prime Aura Programme was placed in a newspaper with obviously cloned masthead of The Punch Newspaper.
However, the WTO DG disowned the project, identifying it as just one of the false publications that have been done in the past using her name.
The WTO boss said her lawyers are already trying to get to the bottom of the fake post.
She also warned Nigerians against subscribing to the investment project so as not to lose their money.
She said, “Please note this fake use of my name and photo and ignore. My team and lawyers are handling. But in the meantime, like other fake postings falsely using my name and image I don’t want anyone to lose their money given that this is on a supposed Punch website and Punch is a popular Nigerian paper.
“My staff have visited the website, and it appears to be fake. So @MobilePunch kindly take action as well. We must fight the fraudsters vigorously!!”
