The “new manager bounce” proved to be a myth for Roberto De Zerbi as his Tottenham Hotspur side spiraled into the Premier League relegation zone following a toothless 1-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
In a match defined by VAR controversy, defensive injuries, and a lack of clinical edge, the North London giants found themselves in the unthinkable position of the bottom three with only six rounds remaining in the 2025/26 campaign.
The contest began with a spark of hope for the visitors. In the 21st minute, Spurs were awarded a penalty after Omar Alderete’s challenge in the box. However, the mood shifted instantly as referee Robert Jones was called to the monitor. Following a lengthy VAR review, the decision was overturned, leaving the Tottenham bench incensed and the team visibly deflated.
Despite the setback, Spurs found openings. Dominic Solanke forced a world-class save from Robin Roefs just before the break, and Richarlison tested the keeper early in the second half. But for all their possession, the lack of a finishing touch that has plagued their season remained painfully evident.
The decisive moment arrived in the 61st minute. Nordi Mukiele tried his luck from distance, and in a stroke of misfortune that summed up Tottenham’s season, the ball took a wicked deflection off a defender, wrong-footing Antonin Kinsky and nestling into the back of the net.

Things went from bad to worse for De Zerbi shortly after. Defensive mainstay Cristian Romero was forced off with an injury that looked significant, joining a growing list of casualties that includes a battered Kinsky, who narrowly finished the match.
Spurs threw everything forward in a desperate 11-minute period of stoppage time. Pedro Porro, who had earlier been booked for dissent, unleashed a goal-bound free kick in the 92nd minute, only for Roefs to produce another fingertip save to preserve the Black Cats’ lead.
While Sunderland celebrated a result that bolsters their own mid-table security, the final whistle brought a grim reality for Tottenham.
With six games left to save their Premier League status, Tottenham must find an identity and some points fast. The De Zerbi era has begun not with a flourish, but with a fight for survival.
