Jannik Sinner reclaimed the world number one spot for the first time since early November, following a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte Carlo Masters final.
The Monaco showdown marked the first meeting between the top two players in the world since Sinner defeated Alcaraz in straight sets at the ATP Finals in November 2025.
In a match dominated by windy conditions and intense rallies, the two players combined for 83 unforced errors, testing their precision and mental resilience. The tie-break in the first set proved decisive, with Sinner capitalizing on a double fault from Alcaraz to secure the set.
The second set saw Alcaraz break early to lead 3-1, but the Italian remained composed, exploiting his opponent’s inconsistent serving to turn the match in his favour. Sinner clinched the set 6-3, sealing his victory and his 27th ATP Tour title.
This triumph gives the 24-year-old Italian his third Masters 1000 title of the year, adding to victories in Indian Wells and Miami, and extends his winning streak in Masters series events to 22 matches.
Sinner now returns to the pinnacle of men’s tennis, reinforcing his status as one of the sport’s rising stars.
