Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Sunday conceded defeat after a closely watched election that signals a major political shift in Europe.

Orbán, who has ruled Hungary for 16 years, described the outcome as “painful” and confirmed he had congratulated opposition leader Péter Magyar on his victory.

“We are going to serve the Hungarian nation from opposition,” Orbán told supporters in Budapest as reported by AP.

Magyar also announced that Orbán personally called to concede, marking a dramatic end to the long-standing dominance of the ruling Fidesz party.

Early official results showed Magyar’s Tisza party leading with about 51 per cent of the vote against 40 per cent for Fidesz, with ballots still being counted. The opposition was ahead in most constituencies, including strong performances expected in the capital.

The election, widely regarded as Europe’s most consequential this year, drew a record turnout of over 77 per cent, reflecting strong voter engagement in a contest framed as a defining choice for Hungary’s future.

Magyar campaigned on anti-corruption, public service reforms, and a shift toward closer alignment with Europe, describing the vote as a choice between “East or West” and between “propaganda or honest public discourse.”

Orbán, a key figure in global far-right politics and an ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, has faced criticism over his government’s stance on media freedoms, minority rights, and relations with the European Union.

Both camps reported alleged electoral irregularities, raising the possibility of disputes as final results are confirmed.

If upheld, the outcome would end Orbán’s long tenure and reshape Hungary’s political direction.
