Transport chaos sparks 3-day lecture boycott at OAU

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife

Quick Read

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have decided to stop attending lectures for 72 hours because of issues with the school’s transport system.

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have decided to stop attending lectures for 72 hours because of issues with the school’s transport system.

The boycott will take place from Tuesday, April 14 to Thursday, April 16, 2026. During this period, students will not attend any classes.

The decision was announced by the Students’ Union after a meeting held on April 9. The union said the protest is necessary because the transport problems on campus have not been solved.

According to a statement signed by the union president, Adelani David, and the secretary-general, Habeeb Oke, all students are expected to stay away from lectures during the protest.

The problem started after the university introduced a new transport system. This followed the donation of buses and tricycles meant to improve movement on campus, with support from Oluremi Tinubu.

Under the new system, only the newly provided vehicles are allowed to operate within the campus.

However, students say the new arrangement has caused more problems. They complain about long queues, not enough vehicles, overcrowding, and long waiting times.

Students who live outside the campus are said to be the most affected, as transport options are now limited and more expensive.

The union also said that removing the old transport operators has made things worse, since they used to help move students around.

Although the university management has said the situation is temporary and more buses will be added later, students say the changes are not happening fast enough.

The Students’ Union is asking for:

More buses to be added immediately

Temporary return of the old transport options

Better involvement of students in decision-making

The union said it will review the situation after the 72-hour boycott. If nothing improves, students may take further action, including a larger protest.
