Arsenal booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after holding Sporting CP to a tense 0-0 draw in the second leg of their quarter-final clash on Tuesday night.

The Gunners progressed on a 1-0 aggregate scoreline, having secured a narrow victory in the first leg, in a contest defined more by discipline and defensive organisation than attacking brilliance.

In front of a charged atmosphere, Arsenal controlled large spells of possession but struggled to convert their dominance into goals, with Sporting equally resilient at the back.

Both sides created chances in a tightly contested encounter, but lacked the cutting edge required to break the deadlock.

Arsenal came closest to scoring late in the game when Leandro Trossard’s header struck the post, with the Sporting goalkeeper well beaten.

Sporting also had their moments, with Joao Simoes firing narrowly wide in stoppage time, while earlier efforts rattled the woodwork in a sign of how finely balanced the contest remained until the final whistle.

The match was marked by intense midfield battles and tactical adjustments from both sides, with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta introducing fresh legs in search of a breakthrough, while Sporting made key substitutions to maintain pressure.

Despite the late push from the Portuguese side, Arsenal’s defence stood firm, ensuring their slender first-leg advantage was enough to see them through.

The final whistle confirmed Arsenal’s progression, capping a disciplined performance that prioritised control and defensive solidity over attacking risk.
