Security agencies have uncovered a fresh terror plot targeting major infrastructure in Abuja and neighbouring Niger State, following a memo issued by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

According to a report by The Associated Press, which obtained the memo, the planned targets include the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, a correctional facility in Abuja, and a military detention centre in Niger State.

The memo warned that the attackers intend to release detained terrorists and inflict significant damage on aviation infrastructure.

Security forces are on alert over the threat.

The warning comes amid concerns that the plot mirrors a recent attack in Niamey, capital of Niger Republic, where terrorists struck an air force base in January, injuring four soldiers and damaging an aircraft.

“Their intention is to release detained terrorists and inflict significant damage on critical aviation infrastructure.

“An analysis of the report reveals a concerning correlation between the potential targeting of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Abuja and recent large-scale attacks on aviation facilities in Niger Republic, notably in Niamey and Tahoua,” the publication said.

The development comes days after the United States Department of State authorised non-emergency government employees and their families to leave its Abuja embassy over security concerns.

However, the Federal Government described the advisory as a precautionary measure based on internal protocols.
