Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has congratulated Romuald Wadagni on his victory in the recent presidential election held in the Republic of Benin.
Wadagni, who currently serves as the country’s Minister of Finance, secured a decisive win in the April 12 poll, gaining a strong majority of votes.
His emergence as president-elect signals a major political transition in the Francophone West African nation and is seen by many observers as a continuation of economic-focused leadership, given his background in finance and public service.
In a statement released through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Wadagni’s victory as a clear reflection of the trust and confidence the people of Benin have placed in his leadership abilities.
He noted that Wadagni’s performance and reputation as Finance Minister played a key role in earning him widespread support among voters.
Tinubu further emphasized the long-standing diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between Nigeria and Benin, noting that both countries share not only a border but also deep historical connections and mutual interests.
He expressed optimism that Wadagni’s administration would open a new chapter of stronger collaboration between the two nations, especially in areas such as trade, border security, infrastructure development, and regional stability.
The Nigerian leader also highlighted the importance of cooperation within West Africa, stressing that unity among neighboring countries is essential for addressing common challenges such as insecurity, economic instability, and cross-border crimes.
He said he looks forward to working closely with Wadagni to strengthen partnerships that will benefit both nations and the wider region.
Tinubu praised the people of Benin for their peaceful conduct during the election process, commending their commitment to democratic values and orderly transition of power.
According to him, the calm and credible nature of the election demonstrates the growing strength of democracy in the region.
“This peaceful transition marks an important moment in your nation’s history,” Tinubu noted, while encouraging continued dedication to democratic principles and good governance.
He concluded by wishing Wadagni wisdom, strength, and success as he prepares to assume office, assuring him of Nigeria’s full support.
Tinubu also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working through regional and continental bodies such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) to promote peace, economic growth, and shared prosperity across Africa.
Overall, Wadagni’s victory is being viewed as a significant development not only for Benin but also for the broader West African region, where strong leadership and cooperation remain key to sustainable development and stability.
