A Nigerian man, Nwaiwu Ifeanyi Placid, has been arrested in Thailand over his alleged role in a cocaine trafficking ring operating across Bangkok’s nightlife districts.
According to Thai authorities, the 46-year-old was tracked and apprehended during a targeted operation near Silom Soi 1, where police recovered about 27 grammes of cocaine.
The arrest, confirmed by Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Sayam Boonsom, is part of a broader crackdown on a drug syndicate believed to be supplying cocaine within the city’s entertainment hubs.
Three other suspects were also picked up during the operation, including Swiss national Thomas Giubibini and two Thai nationals, Thanayot Asawamethi, 35, and Nattawat Wangkitjinda, 34, on drug possession charges.
Authorities said total seizures from the operation included about 30 grammes of cocaine, a vehicle, 1.5 million baht in cash, foreign currency worth 15,000 baht, and jewellery valued at 400,000 baht.
Police linked the latest arrests to earlier operations targeting the same network. On October 26 last year, officers posing as construction workers dismantled a Nana-based drug ring, arresting nine Nigerian suspects.
A follow-up raid on January 23 led to additional arrests and the seizure of assets worth over 7 million baht.
Investigators later identified another Nigerian, known as “Patrick,” as a key figure in the syndicate. The 47-year-old is said to have lived in Thailand for at least 17 years and allegedly ran a “middleman-free” drug distribution network.
Police revealed that operatives infiltrated the group’s communication channels, tracking movements before moving in for arrests.
Deputy commissioner Theeradet Thamsuthee said the suspect resisted arrest but was subdued by officers and later “confessed to the charges.”
