Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step down from the 2027 presidential race and allow a younger candidate to emerge within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Umeh made this known on Monday during an appearance on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television Prime Time, where he spoke on the future of the party and leadership direction ahead of the next general elections.

While acknowledging Atiku’s long-standing influence and contributions to Nigerian politics, Umeh noted that the former presidential candidate has been contesting elections since 2003 and should now focus on mentoring the next generation of leaders.

According to him, younger politicians are bringing fresh ideas capable of delivering the kind of change Nigerians are demanding, and the party must embrace that shift if it hopes to remain competitive.

Umeh also referenced a recent interview in which Atiku reportedly indicated that the 2027 election could be his final attempt at the presidency.

However, he expressed concern that continuing to contest may signal a reluctance to support emerging leaders within the party.

He warned that failure to create space for younger aspirants could lead to internal conflicts, which may ultimately weaken the party’s chances.

Umeh added that intense competition without compromise could harm party unity and affect its overall performance in the elections.
