In a bizarre twist that seems straight out of a spy thriller, Oscar-winning filmmaker Pavel Talankin has found himself the victim of a strange and inexplicable incident after his coveted Academy Award went missing—possibly thanks to some dark forces at play.
Talankin, best known for his documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin, was traveling from New York to Germany on Wednesday when his prized Oscar statuette, packed neatly in a box by Lufthansa staff, mysteriously vanished.
The drama began at John F. Kennedy Airport, where security halted Talankin, claiming that the golden statuette, standing at a commanding 13.5 inches tall, could potentially double as a weapon.
But here’s where it gets truly bizarre: When Talankin landed in Germany, the Oscar was gone. Vanished. Poof. The airline, now caught in a whirlwind of confusion, claims they’re investigating with “urgency” and “care”, but some are wondering if this isn’t just the latest act of Putin’s witchcraft at play.
After all, as Talankin’s documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin highlights, Russia has been known for its… unusual methods of silencing critics. Could it be that the Kremlin, infuriated by the documentary’s daring portrayal of war propaganda in Russian schools, decided to claim the Oscar as a trophy of their own?
“It’s just like something out of a spy novel,” said Talankin’s executive producer, Robin Hessman. “This wouldn’t have happened to Leonardo DiCaprio.”
While the Oscar was reportedly packed with bubble wrap and tape (because of course, you can never be too careful with a multi-thousand-dollar statuette), one can’t help but wonder if some unseen hand of fate—or perhaps a state-sponsored kleptomaniac with an eye for gold—was involved. Maybe Putin’s secret agents are as stealthy as they are obsessed with making sure no one speaks ill of the motherland.
