Nigerian fashion designer, Tejumade Foyeke Makanjuola is doing a great work in harnessing native fabrics to style trendy looks. The truth is that most Nigerian fashion designers would rather go for other imported fabrics in designing modern styles. But in Foyeke Makanjuola’s GBEMI gown, the Ankara native fabric became a priority. This suggests that creativity is a function of innovative mind like hers.

In GBEMI, the Ankara print fabric choice takes the central focus. It depicts a black background with motif clusters of gold and deep ash colours that flow across the garment in a very precise manner. This arrangement creates a feel of indigenous textile depth that draws one’s concentration to every part of the dress. For me, Foyeke Makanjuola has not made a mistake in choosing Ankara for this design; in fact that she chose Ankara gave the style a fresh perspective of elegance and purpose.

GBEMI is well crafted; from cutting, sewing, waist snatching, architectural and structural balance, the intricate tailoring and expertise of the designer are detailed. Draping in a long, flared and flowing shape, this gown is an artistry work. The magic is in the sleeves and I am amazed at the masterful touch therein. In that the right sleeve is crafted in a short socket or ball shape while the left sleeve takes a long form; not bland but made from chantilly lace fabric that connects through the neckline. These feautures altogether create a balance and interesting view of sophistication and fluidity.

This gown is not like any other. It is an unconventional creation. The balance between the design and wearability is applauding. Even the silhouette is a statement of feminine grace and chic. From choice of fabric to style delivery, GBEMI dress does well. However, the flowing nature of the gown could be overwhelming and overbearing to call simple but who cares about that especially that the flowing flare gives a regal modesty and appearance?

Tejumade Foyeke Makanjuola, the Creative Director of Every Tribe Concept Ltd has designed this gown such that in any person’s wardrobe, it won’t be a second choice but always the first choice. The craftsmanship efforts she poured into this design sparks a discussion that the use of native textile in modern designs is not unpopular or obsolete; it is a principal innovation that will survive beyond this present age.
