The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano has detained six individuals following a clampdown on suspected drug activity around a university campus.
The arrests were confirmed by the Kano Strategic Command’s Commander, Mr Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal, in a statement released on Monday through the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari.
According to Yahaya-Lawal, the suspects were picked up during a targeted operation at identified black spots in and around the old campus of Bayero University, Kano. The exercise formed part of “Operation Sharar Mafaka”, which was launched after the university authorities lodged a formal complaint.
He explained that those arrested were allegedly involved in trespassing as well as the sale and use of illicit substances within and near the institution.
Items believed to be connected to the unlawful activities were seized during the raid and later destroyed to prevent further use.
“This action demonstrates our commitment to ensuring a drug-free environment where students, staff and their families can live and work in safety.
“We will not relent in our efforts to dislodge all drug joints under Operation Sharar Mafaka,” Yahaya-Lawal said.
The NDLEA commander attributed the success of the operation to close cooperation between the agency and the university management, noting that prompt reporting made swift intervention possible.
He cautioned that the agency would not allow public institutions, particularly educational facilities, to be used for drug-related offences.
Yahaya-Lawal also appealed to residents and organisations to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, stressing that public support is vital in tackling drug abuse and trafficking across the state.
