2027: NDC backs Southern Presidency, North to return after one term

Quick Read

The decision was reached during the party’s National Convention held in Abuja on Saturday.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has officially zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.

The decision was reached during the party’s National Convention held in Abuja on Saturday.

Delegates at the convention approved the motion after it was presented by Afam Victor Ogene, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State.

According to the resolution adopted by the party, the presidential ticket will return to Northern Nigeria immediately after the completion of the southern candidate’s four-year tenure. Party leaders described the arrangement as part of efforts to promote fairness, balance, and unity within the party ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The decision is expected to strengthen the chances of Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, who recently defected to the NDC. Other southern aspirants interested in contesting for the party’s presidential ticket can now officially purchase nomination forms ahead of the primaries.

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, who also recently joined the party, is expected to remain one of the key figures in the NDC’s preparations for the 2027 elections.

The development has generated political reactions across the country, especially as opposition parties continue consultations and realignments ahead of the next presidential race.

Analysts believe the zoning arrangement could influence ongoing coalition talks and shape the political landscape in the months leading to the election.
