A new report has revealed that Nigeria recorded 1,326 attacks against journalists and media organisations over the past nine years, highlighting persistent threats to press freedom across the country.
The findings were released by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, CJID, through its Press Attack Tracker, which monitors violations against media professionals.
According to the organisation, at least 28 journalists lost their lives within the review period, while many others were subjected to unlawful arrests, harassment, intimidation and physical assault.
The report noted that journalists also faced equipment seizures, abductions and online harassment while carrying out their duties.
CJID said the tracker was established to document cases of press freedom violations and draw attention to the risks journalists encounter in Nigeria.
The organisation stressed that attacks on journalists undermine democracy and restrict the public’s access to information.
It called on authorities to strengthen the protection of media professionals and ensure perpetrators of attacks against journalists are held accountable.
Media rights advocates have repeatedly raised concerns over the safety of journalists in the country, warning that intimidation and violence could discourage investigative reporting and weaken public trust in democratic institutions.
