As part of activities marking the 2026 Lions Environment Week, members of Lions Clubs International under District 404A3 have intensified campaigns promoting cleaner environments and responsible waste management across communities in Lagos State.

In Ikorodu Local Government Area, the Eko Centennial Lions Club took its environmental advocacy campaign to Agura and Gberigbe markets, where members distributed reusable eco-friendly shopping bags to traders and residents in a bid to reduce dependence on single-use plastics.

The initiative was aimed at addressing the growing challenge posed by plastic waste, which environmental experts say contributes significantly to blocked drainage systems, flooding and pollution in Lagos.

Speaking during the outreach, the club’s president, Kehinde Mustapha, said the campaign was designed to encourage practical behavioural change at the grassroots level.

According to her, environmental sustainability begins with simple daily choices capable of producing long-term impact.

She explained that replacing disposable nylon bags with reusable alternatives would help reduce waste generation and promote healthier surroundings across communities.

Mustapha also stressed the importance of community participation in tackling environmental problems, noting that markets remain critical centres for waste generation due to their high commercial activities.

Beyond distributing reusable bags, members of the club also sensitised traders and residents on proper waste disposal practices and the dangers associated with plastic pollution.

The campaign featured direct engagement with market users, with volunteers encouraging residents to embrace environmentally responsible habits and collective action towards cleaner communities.

As part of the programme, members of the club paid a courtesy visit to the palace of the Alagura of Agura, Moruf Ahmed Olalekan Ogunnaike, before commencing activities in the markets.

The monarch commended the Lions Club for what he described as a timely and impactful intervention aimed at addressing growing environmental challenges within the community.

Oba Ogunnaike urged traders and residents to support the initiative by adopting environmentally friendly practices, adding that community cooperation remains essential to achieving lasting environmental improvement.

Stakeholders at the event noted that rising urbanisation and increasing waste generation in Lagos have made sustained public awareness campaigns and community-driven environmental actions more critical than ever.

They maintained that initiatives promoting reusable materials and responsible waste disposal would help reduce environmental pressure while gradually reshaping public attitudes toward consumption and waste management.
