World record holder Tobi Amusan has won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing African Athletics Championships in Ghana after winning the women’s 100m hurdles final on Wednesday.
Another Nigerian athlete, Adaobi Tabugbo, finished third to win bronze, while Ashley Miller came second to stop Nigeria from taking both first and second positions.
The official race times were not available immediately because organisers were dealing with technical problems, including faulty timing systems, missing live results, incomplete reports, and inconsistent disqualifications. These issues have attracted criticism from athletes and fans.
Amusan had already shown strong form before the final, recording the fastest times in both the heats and semi-finals before winning the gold medal race.
With the victory, Nigeria’s medal total increased to four medals ahead of the men’s and women’s 100m finals later on Wednesday.
Nigeria had earlier won two medals on Tuesday at the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships. Divine Oladipo won silver in the women’s discus event, while Obiageri Amaechi claimed bronze.
Oladipo was making her first international appearance for Nigeria after switching allegiance from Great Britain.
