The Lagos State Government on Monday flagged off the 2026 distribution of welfare packages to pensioners across the state, reaffirming its commitment to improving the wellbeing, dignity and quality of life of retired public servants.

Director-General of the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), Mr. Babalola Obilana, speaking at the official presentation of welfare packages to retirees at Anchor Events Centre, Agidingbi, Ikeja, said the initiative was part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s broader efforts under the THEMES+ agenda to ensure that pensioners continue to enjoy support, comfort and peace of mind after years of meritorious service to the state.

He described the exercise as more than just the distribution of welfare items, noting that it was also an opportunity for the government to celebrate and honour retirees whose sacrifices and dedication contributed significantly to the growth of the Lagos State Public Service.

“Today’s gathering is not only about the allocation of welfare items, but also about celebrating and appreciating men and women whose years of sacrifice and dedication contributed immensely to the growth and development of the Lagos State Public Service,” Obilana said.

According to him, retirees played critical roles in building and sustaining the institutions that continue to drive governance and development in Lagos State.

“Our retirees played vital roles in building the strong and dynamic Public Service we have today. Through commitment, professionalism and perseverance, you served the State diligently and helped sustain the institutions that continue to drive governance and development in Lagos State,” he stated.

The LASPEC boss stressed that the state government recognises retirement as a phase that should be characterised by dignity, comfort and fulfilment, rather than hardship and neglect.

“As a Government, we recognise that retirement should be a period of comfort, dignity and peace of mind. This is why the Lagos State Government remains committed to initiatives that promote the welfare and wellbeing of pensioners,” he added.

Obilana noted that although the welfare packages might appear modest, they symbolise the government’s appreciation and continued concern for the wellbeing of pensioners across the state.

“The welfare packages being distributed may seem modest, but they symbolise the Government’s sincere gratitude and continued concern for your wellbeing. They are intended to provide support and reassurance, while reminding every retiree that you remain an important part of the Lagos State family,” he said.

He further disclosed that the welfare distribution exercise commenced with pensioners in Ikeja Division, while simultaneous distribution would continue across Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos and Epe divisions to ensure wider accessibility and seamless participation for retirees statewide.

According to him, the programme also reflects LASPEC’s commitment to improving pension administration and strengthening support services for retirees.

The Director-General reaffirmed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to prompt payment of pension entitlements and the continuous implementation of policies aimed at improving the living conditions of retirees.

Speaking at the event, the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Mrs. Olasunkanmi Oyegbola, said the distribution of the welfare packages reflected the Lagos State Government’s continued commitment to the wellbeing and welfare of its retirees.
