The Federal Government has approved a 50 per cent reduction in fares on all train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to cushion transportation costs for Nigerians during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
The fare discount was announced by the Federal Ministry of Transportation in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi.
According to the statement, the subsidised fares took effect from Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and will remain in force until Monday, June 1, 2026.
Under the arrangement, passengers travelling on all NRC passenger train services across the country will pay only half of the existing approved ticket fares within the specified period.
The ministry explained that the intervention was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to ease the financial burden on Nigerians and support increased mobility during the festive season.
It further disclosed that passengers who had already purchased tickets at the old rates before the announcement would receive a 50 per cent rebate.
The rebate, according to the ministry, will be reusable for train journeys on or before June 1, 2026.
The statement clarified that train schedules and timetables would remain unchanged throughout the period of the fare reduction.
The Federal Ministry of Transportation appreciated Nigerians for their continued support and cooperation, while wishing Muslim faithful and all train passengers a peaceful and joyful Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The initiative is expected to boost passenger traffic on rail corridors across the country as many Nigerians travel to celebrate the Sallah holiday with family members and loved ones.
