Crystal Palace claimed a historic UEFA Conference League title on Wednesday night after defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in a tense final played at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, Germany.

French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta emerged the hero for the English side after scoring the decisive goal early in the second half to hand Palace their first major European trophy.

After a tightly contested first half filled with missed opportunities and fierce midfield battles, Crystal Palace finally broke the deadlock in the 51st minute.

Mateta reacted quickest to a rebound inside the penalty area and fired home from close range after goalkeeper Augusto Batalla had initially denied Adam Wharton’s goal-bound effort.

Oliver Glasner’s side had looked the more threatening for large parts of the encounter, with Ismaïla Sarr, Daniel Munoz and Tyrick Mitchell constantly stretching the Rayo Vallecano defence.

Palace nearly took the lead before halftime when Tyrick Mitchell’s powerful header narrowly missed the right post in stoppage time of the opening half, while Daniel Munoz also wasted a good aerial opportunity moments later.

Rayo Vallecano, however, refused to surrender and pushed aggressively for an equaliser in the closing stages of the game.

Spanish forward Sergio Camello fired over the bar in the 83rd minute, while Florian Lejeune also squandered a free header from close range late in the contest.

The Spanish side’s last real chance came deep into stoppage time when Pedro Diaz unleashed a long-range effort that flew wide of the left post.

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson also produced key saves during the second half, notably denying Alemao from close range as the Eagles defended their slender advantage.

The final attracted an attendance of 39,176 spectators and was marked by intense physical battles, with several players booked by Italian referee Maurizio Mariani.

For Crystal Palace, the victory capped a remarkable European campaign and secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Europa League.

Despite the defeat, Rayo Vallecano earned widespread praise for reaching the final in what was the club’s first major European campaign in more than two decades.
