LASU Registration Deadline Extended By A Month
In response to the yearnings of students and parents, the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has, for the second time, extended for one month the registration date for all categories of students of the Lagos State University (LASU).
Governor Fashola had on Friday, January 6, 2012, approved the extension of the deadline for registration of both fresh and returning students of the university to Friday, January 13, 2012 from the initial date, December 29, 2011.
The students were also given the concession of paying their fees in two instalments of 70 – 30 percent.
Responding to an appeal by a student of the university while fielding questions at a stakeholders forum to mark his 1,700 Days in office, Governor Fashola said the Vice Chancellor of the institution had earlier made the request.
He gave the approval because, as he said, the students “are our children, we want them in school, we want them to have the best of education.”
The former approval was sequel to a formal request made by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor John Obafunwa, praying for an extension of the registration deadline which was previously fixed for Friday, December 29, 2011, and an approval for the payment of school fees by both fresh and returning students in two instalments of two thirds before registration and one third not later than one month afterwards.
In his letter dated Thursday, January 5, 2012, the Vice Chancellor told the governor that the extension of the registration deadline would correct the shortfall in the required number of students registered till date then which is just 10,367 or 59 percent of the 17,679 students expected to fulfill the registration requirement.
As at January 5, this year, 9,217 or 70 percent out of the 13,111 returning students have paid their school fees and completed their registration process, while only 1,150 or 25 percent of the 4,568 fresh students have registered for their various programmes.
This, according to Obafunwa, was why the instalments payment was necessary. The Vice Chancellor also explained that allowing the students to pay the fees instalmentally, would also ensure a level of discipline by both parents and students.
Giving the concession, Governor Fashola reiterated his administration’s commitment to restore the standard of learning in the institution and urged the staff and students to cooperate with government in making the institution a real citadel of knowledge through quality education, discipline and qualitative research work.
