Veteran Nigerian rapper Ice Prince recently made a shocking confession about the staggering amount he spent on Cannabis in six years.

His revelation stirred up the conversation surrounding the financial and physical toll of celebrity substance culture. While some plainly criticised the artist for what they regarded as financial irresponsibility, others dug deeper, asking questions about the hidden crisis in the Nigerian entertainment ecosystem.

Cannabis, popularly known as weed, has been a romanticised drug in the entertainment industry, often said to be a tool of creativity and inspiration. From music videos to social media posts, celebrities paint the smoke-filled sanctuaries as a place where hits are born.

Medically, however, experts constantly warn against the consumption and dependence on such substances, noting that it creates a psychological problem. They report that some artists develop ‘creative dependency’ explaining that such individuals cannot perform in their chosen career without being under the influence.

The consumption of this hard substance over time, begins to take a toll on the physical health of the individual, manifesting as respiratory strain, vocal cord damage, cognitive fatigue, and heightened anxiety.
