The Osun State Police Command has reacted to the circulation of what it regarded as “false and misleading information on social media and other communication platforms alleging banditry invasion in some parts of the state.”

The command debunked the rumour and described it as “unfounded, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary panic, fear, and tension” in the state.

It warned purveyors of such fake news to desist forthwith or face the full wrath of the law.

The command’s PPRO, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said this in a press release following reports of bandits’ invasion of some communities in Osun on Tuesday which led to schools shutting down in the state.

The release read in part: “The Command wishes to state unequivocally that these reports are unfounded, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary panic, fear, and tension among law-abiding residents. Extensive security assessments and intelligence gathering conducted by the Command have not substantiated the claims being circulated.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, mnips, therefore warns individuals and groups involved in the deliberate creation, publication, and dissemination of false security alerts to desist forthwith.

“The spread of unverified information not only undermines public confidence but also constitutes a threat to public peace and security.

“Members of the public are advised to verify security-related information through official channels before sharing same.

“Anyone found spreading false information, capable of causing public disorder or inciting fear, will be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the relevant provisions of the law.

“The Command reassures residents of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property and urges citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and continue with their lawful activities without fear.

“Security agencies remain on alert and are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of all residents across the state as the command has deployed covert and Violent Crime Response operatives to be on the lookout.”

He urged the public to report any suspicious movement or security concern to the nearest police station or other security agencies for prompt action.
