Liverpool have officially named Andoni Iraola as their new head coach, entrusting the highly-rated Spaniard with the task of leading the club into a new chapter following the departure of Arne Slot.
The Reds confirmed on Monday that Iraola has agreed a deal to take charge ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, ending weeks of speculation over who would inherit one of the most coveted jobs in world football.
The 43-year-old arrives at Anfield with his reputation soaring after an outstanding three-year spell with AFC Bournemouth, where he transformed the Cherries into one of the Premier League’s most exciting teams and guided them to a historic sixth-place finish last season, securing European football for the first time in the club’s history.
Speaking after his appointment, an enthusiastic Iraola admitted the opportunity to lead Liverpool was impossible to resist.
“Really excited, really excited,” he said. “Liverpool is a massive club, one of the biggest in the world. But when you understand a little bit more about this club, you realise how special it is.
“You don’t need a lot of things to get attracted by Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool. The atmosphere, the supporters, the players, and the chance to fight for titles make it an incredible opportunity.”
Iraola’s journey to one of football’s elite dugouts has been remarkable. A former Athletic Club stalwart, he made more than 500 appearances during a distinguished playing career and earned seven caps for Spain before finishing his career with New York City FC.
His managerial rise began in Cyprus with AEK Larnaca, where he lifted the Cypriot Super Cup, before successful spells at Mirandés and Rayo Vallecano. At Rayo, he secured promotion to La Liga and established himself as one of Spain’s brightest coaching talents.
Now, after impressing in England with Bournemouth’s fearless attacking football and tactical innovation, Iraola faces his biggest challenge yet.
With Liverpool’s passionate fanbase eager for continued success and silverware, all eyes will be on the Spaniard as he prepares to take the reins at Anfield and launch what many hope will be another golden era in the club’s illustrious history.
