Former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has cautioned against measuring Barcelona’s progress solely by their ability to win the UEFA Champions League, arguing that the competition can unfairly undermine long-term projects.
The former Barcelona coach made the remarks while reflecting on what the Catalan giants need to do to end their wait for European glory.
According to Guardiola, failure to lift the Champions League trophy should not automatically be viewed as evidence that a club’s project has failed.
“The Champions League is a competition that destroys projects, and I hope that’s not the case at Barça,” Guardiola said.
He stressed that knockout football often hinges on factors beyond a team’s control, including injuries, timing and refereeing decisions.
“We must not think that just because you don’t win it, everything that has been built is no good,” he said.
Guardiola argued that domestic league performance remains the most reliable measure of a team’s quality and consistency over an entire season.
“The league is the competition that gives you consistency and continuity,” he said, adding that “In the Champions League, you need to reach the decisive stages in good condition, without injuries, and refereeing also has a huge impact.”
Barcelona have enjoyed a resurgence in recent seasons and remain focused on re-establishing themselves among Europe’s elite clubs after years of disappointment in continental competition.
However, Guardiola insisted that the club’s progress should be assessed by its overall development rather than a single tournament outcome.
“What matters is that the daily work is excellent, that the team keeps growing and improving,” he said.
The Spaniard warned against labelling a campaign a failure simply because it does not end with Champions League success.
“They shouldn’t believe the season is a failure just because they don’t reach the Champions League final or win it,” Guardiola added.
“The league is what sets the foundation for judging whether a season has been good or not.”
