Widely respected for his versatility, tactical awareness and consistency, Iwobi is expected to provide viewers with a current player’s perspective on the modern game and the challenges faced by footballers competing at the highest level.
Nigerian international and Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has joined SuperSport’s elite team of analysts for the FIFA World Cup 2026, strengthening what the broadcaster describes as its most formidable World Cup coverage team ever.
The announcement was made on Thursday as the tournament kicked off across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with SuperSport confirming that all 104 matches will be broadcast live on DStv and GOtv.
Fresh from another impressive Premier League campaign, Iwobi is set to headline a panel that includes some of Africa’s most celebrated football figures, among them former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan, ex-Super Eagles skipper William Troost-Ekong, South African legend Siphiwe Tshabalala and Ivorian great Salomon Kalou.
SuperSport said Iwobi’s inclusion reflects its commitment to providing viewers with first-hand insight from players who have competed at the highest level of the game.
The Fulham midfielder arrives in the studio as one of Nigeria’s most experienced active footballers, having earned more than 95 caps for the Super Eagles, represented the country at the FIFA World Cup, reached multiple Africa Cup of Nations finals and established himself as a key performer in the English Premier League.
Widely respected for his versatility, tactical awareness and consistency, Iwobi is expected to provide viewers with a current player’s perspective on the modern game and the challenges faced by footballers competing at the highest level.
Also joining the analysis team is former Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong, who retired from international football in December 2025 after a distinguished career that included leading the Super Eagles and winning the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Player of the Tournament award.
Speaking on his appointment, Troost-Ekong expressed delight at becoming part of the broadcaster’s World Cup coverage.
“It feels fantastic to officially join the SuperSport family for the World Cup,” said Troost-Ekong.
“SuperSport is where I watched tournaments long before I had the chance to play at the World Cup for Nigeria in 2018, so being part of it now is genuinely special, and a full life cycle moment.
“African fans live football with incredible passion and knowledge, and I truly believe the fans are the heartbeat. The whole continent watches together, supports one another and wants to see African teams do well.
“This makes me so excited to offer insight from a current player’s perspective while helping audiences feel even closer to the biggest tournament in the world. I know what these tournaments feel like from the inside – the pressure, the preparation, the emotions, the small details that can change everything.
“That’s the perspective I want to bring to viewers, so we can all be on the journey together to watch African teams make history.”
Troost-Ekong, who featured for Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, said the tournament remains the defining moment of his playing career.
“My best football memory is playing at the 2018 World Cup. Walking out for our first game against Croatia and singing the national anthem, I almost had to pinch myself. I was there, on the world stage, in a moment I’d dreamed about,” he said.
“I’m so excited to watch this World Cup unfold across the USA, Canada and Mexico because history is going to be written again, right in front of us.”
The former defender also believes the expanded tournament presents a significant opportunity for African football.
“This tournament is so special because we have a record number of African teams competing – and that feels only right with the level of talent and passion Africa has to offer,” he added.
“It is a testament to how important Africa is to world football, and to see the continent represented like this on the biggest stage is something to celebrate.”
Further strengthening the panel is Ghanaian football icon Asamoah Gyan, Africa’s all-time leading FIFA World Cup goalscorer with six goals and Ghana’s highest-ever scorer.
South African legend Siphiwe “Shabba” Tshabalala, remembered for scoring the opening goal of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, will also feature prominently in the studio coverage.
The former Kaizer Chiefs star is expected to bring extensive tactical knowledge and a unique perspective on African football.
Former Chelsea forward and UEFA Champions League winner Salomon Kalou returns to the SuperSport panel, while Philadelphia Union head coach Bradley Carnell will provide analysis from the United States, one of the tournament’s host nations.
Carnell’s coaching experience across Europe, Africa and Major League Soccer is expected to provide viewers with detailed tactical assessments and on-the-ground reports throughout the competition.
The broadcaster has also assembled an experienced presentation team comprising Uganda’s Andrew Kabuura, veteran broadcasters Carol Tshabalala and Thomas Mlambo, rising presenter Thato Moeng and Nigerian media personality Mozez Praiz.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is the largest edition in the tournament’s history, featuring 48 teams competing in 104 matches across three host countries.
From the opening match in Mexico City on June 11 to the final in New Jersey on July 19, SuperSport says viewers can expect comprehensive coverage and expert analysis from a team featuring some of Africa’s most accomplished football personalities.
The broadcaster also confirmed that all FIFA World Cup 2026 matches will be available live on DStv Premium, Compact Plus, Compact, Family and Access packages, with streaming options available on supported subscriptions.
