Quick Read

The significance of PFL Africa's launch extends beyond individual bouts. The promotion's presence is expected to create new pathways for African athletes, particularly women, to gain global exposure and compete on some of the sport's biggest stages.

The wait is finally over as the Professional Fighters League (PFL) stages its first-ever event on African soil today, with Lagos set to host a landmark night that could redefine the future of mixed martial arts across the continent.

Taking place at the Eko Convention Centre, PFL Africa: Nigeria First Round is being billed as the biggest MMA event ever held in West Africa, bringing together elite fighters from across the continent and beyond.

At the forefront of the spectacle are Nigeria’s leading MMA stars and a rising generation of female athletes eager to make their mark on the global stage.

Headlining the event is a featherweight showcase bout between Nigeria’s crowd favourite, Wasi “The Nigerian Jaguar” Adeshina (10-3), and Spain’s Ignacio “Nacho” Campos (7-2).

The contest is expected to be one of the defining moments of the evening, with Adeshina carrying the expectations of a passionate home crowd as PFL launches its African chapter.

Campos, however, insists he has come to Lagos for far more than a routine appearance.

“I didn’t come here to fight just anyone. I came here to fight the champion,” the Spaniard said ahead of the bout. “It’s an honour, but once the cage closes, it’s going to be good.”

For Nigerian MMA, the encounter presents an opportunity to showcase the country’s growing reputation as a powerhouse in the sport and underline its readiness to compete at the highest level.

Beyond the main event, one of the night’s biggest attractions will be the continued rise of women in African mixed martial arts.

Leading the charge is undefeated Nigerian strawweight sensation Juliet Ukah (9-0), whose remarkable journey from police officer to MMA contender has captured the imagination of fans. Ukah faces Brazil’s Elisandra Ferreira (9-2) in a highly anticipated showcase contest that could further elevate her status as one of Africa’s brightest prospects.

Confident ahead of the fight, Ukah credited her success to faith, discipline and self-belief.

“God, my skill and my confidence make me different,” she said. “Being in the police goes in line with what I do because it is also a difficult task. It keeps me sharp and disciplined.”

She also welcomed the arrival of PFL Africa, describing it as a transformative platform capable of opening international opportunities for female fighters across the continent.

The significance of PFL Africa’s launch extends beyond individual bouts. The promotion’s presence is expected to create new pathways for African athletes, particularly women, to gain global exposure and compete on some of the sport’s biggest stages.

Elsewhere on the card, undefeated Nigerian middleweight Yahaya “Smile Strong” Yahuza (8-0) faces Cameroon’s Jordan Fongno (4-1), while lightweight contender Raphael Uchegbu (10-2) takes on Mozambique’s Edson Machavane (7-1).

The lightweight tournament co-main event will see Nigeria’s Patrick “Star Boi” Ocheme (8-1) battle Cameroon’s Octave “The Bantu Warrior” Ayinda (7-1) in a clash with major championship implications.

PFL Africa General Manager, Elias Schulze, said the organisation’s decision to launch in Nigeria was driven by the country’s growing influence on the sport and its consistent production of world-class talent.

“The future is Africa, but the present is Nigeria,” Schulze said. “A significant number of athletes competing tonight are Nigerian because the country continues to produce elite-level fighters.”

As the spotlight turns to Lagos, today’s event represents far more than a collection of fights. It marks a historic milestone for African mixed martial arts, with Nigerian stars, emerging champions and female trailblazers at the centre of a new chapter for the sport.

The event will be broadcast live across Africa on SuperSport in English and Canal+ in French.
