World Cup: Vinicius saves Brazil from Morocco shock in Group C opener

Brazil vs Morocco

Quick Read

The goal rewarded Morocco’s strong start after they dominated the early stages and put Brazil under serious pressure.

Vinicius Junior rescued Brazil from a major World Cup scare as the five-time champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco in their Group C opener at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Saturday.

Morocco stunned Brazil in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari capitalised on a defensive mix-up involving goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Gabriel and Marquinhos before lifting the ball over the Liverpool goalkeeper from outside the area.

The goal rewarded Morocco’s strong start after they dominated the early stages and put Brazil under serious pressure.

By the 30th minute, Morocco had already registered 12 shots, the highest number Brazil had faced in a World Cup match since their clash with Mexico in 2018.

But Brazil responded in the 32nd minute through Vinicius, who marked his 50th appearance for the Selecao with a brilliant individual finish.

The Real Madrid forward received a pass from Bruno Guimaraes inside the box, cut inside and fired a powerful shot past Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to bring Brazil level before half-time.

Lucas Paqueta nearly completed the turnaround for Brazil in first-half stoppage time, but his acrobatic attempt was pushed behind for a corner.

Brazil improved after the break, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side showing more urgency in front of several members of the country’s legendary 2002 World Cup-winning squad, including Ronaldo, Kaka and Roberto Carlos.

However, clear chances were limited, and Morocco remained disciplined enough to prevent Brazil from finding a second goal.

Raphinha came closest for Brazil in the second half when he narrowly failed to connect with Guimaraes’ dangerous low cross across the face of goal.

The result means Brazil preserved their remarkable 92-year unbeaten record in opening matches at the World Cup.

However, the performance will raise questions over Ancelotti’s side, who looked sluggish, open at the back and heavily dependent on Vinicius for attacking inspiration.

For Morocco, the draw was another strong statement on the global stage, although their wait for a first opening-game victory at the World Cup continues.

Brazil will see the result as a warning, while Morocco will feel they missed a big chance to claim a famous win after a dominant start.

The match was watched by 80,663 fans at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
