Philip Shaibu, The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), has described the emergence of Edo Queens as champions of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership as a deserving reward for the dedication, hard work and determination displayed by the team and management throughout the season.

Shaibu said this while congratulating Edo Queens in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Ben Ogbemudia, on Sunday in Abuja

“Edo Queens had once again demonstrated the growing strength and influence of women’s football in Nigeria, while bringing honour and pride to Edo State and the country.

“The club’s success reflects the positive impact of sustained investment in sports development and talent nurturing.

“The achievement of the team will serve as an inspiration to a new generation of young female athletes to pursue excellence in sports,” he added.

Shaibu commended the Edo Government for its commitment to sports development, noting that the state had continued to record impressive achievements across various sporting disciplines.

He expressed confidence that the Benin-based team would make Nigeria proud on the continental stage while urging them to remain focused as they prepare to compete against some of Africa’s top clubs.

The NIS boss wished the team greater success in their continental campaign and reaffirmed the support of sports stakeholders and Nigerians in their quest for more laurels for the country.

Edo Queens emerged champions of the 2025/26 NWFL after hold the defending champions, Bayelsa Queens, to a goalless draw in a decisive Super Six clash played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers on Sunday.

The result was enough for the Benin-based side to finish atop the Super Six standings and secure their second league title in three seasons.

The victory reaffirms their status as one of the dominant forces in Nigerian women’s football.

Edo Queens had put themselves in a commanding position heading into the final round after winning three consecutive Super Six matches, including a crucial 2-1 victory over Rivers Angels on Matchday Four.

Needing only a draw to lift the trophy, Edo Queens produced a disciplined performance against a determined Bayelsa Queens side that entered the final day hoping to retain the title.

The encounter ended without goals, but the outcome sparked celebrations among the Edo Queens players and technical crew.

The triumph also marked another milestone for head coach Moses Aduku, who guided the team through a successful campaign and added another league title to his growing résumé.

The title success comes two years after the club won its maiden NWFL crown in the 2023/24 season.

By virtue of winning the league, Edo Queens will represent Nigeria at the WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers, where they will seek a place in the prestigious CAF Women’s Champions League.
