He expressed optimism that Egypt’s young talents will form the foundation of a stronger national team in the coming years, potentially restoring the country to continental dominance after a long trophy drought.
New Barcelona signing Hamza Abdelkarim is being viewed as a potential long-term successor to Mohamed Salah, according to Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan, as the young forward prepares for a breakthrough at the FIFA World Cup.
The 18-year-old, who was a surprise inclusion in Egypt’s squad despite being uncapped at senior level until recently, has quickly risen through the ranks.
His move to Barcelona, initially on loan from Al Ahly, was made permanent on June 10 in a deal worth €1.5 million.
Hassan believes Abdelkarim already has the qualities to make an impact on the world stage, praising his technical ability, mentality, and rapid development.
He said the youngster stood out during youth competitions and has continued to impress since joining Barcelona’s academy setup, where he scored on his debut for the Juvenil side.
The Egypt coach emphasized that the national team is shifting toward a more collective identity rather than relying heavily on Salah alone. He noted that players like Abdelkarim and Omar Marmoush are part of a new generation expected to share responsibility in attack.
Egypt, who are aiming to progress beyond the World Cup group stage for the first time in their history, will open their campaign against Belgium before facing New Zealand and Iran.
Hassan also stressed the importance of long-term planning, saying the squad is evolving as several senior players, including Salah, enter the later stages of their careers. Salah will turn 34 during the tournament.
