The Netherlands delivered a statement performance at the FIFA World Cup on Saturday, dismantling Sweden 5-1 in a dominant round two encounter that underlined their status as serious title contenders.

Inspired by a brilliant display from Cody Gakpo and a relentless attacking unit, the Dutch overwhelmed their Scandinavian opponents from start to finish, racing into a two-goal lead within the opening 17 minutes before completing a comprehensive victory.

The Oranje wasted little time asserting their authority. Brian Brobbey opened the scoring in the fifth minute after being set up by Gakpo, calmly finishing from close range to give Ronald Koeman’s men an early advantage.

Sweden attempted to respond through Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak, but goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced a series of crucial saves to keep the Dutch ahead.

The Netherlands doubled their lead in the 17th minute when Denzel Dumfries delivered a precise pass into the box for Brobbey, who finished clinically to register his second goal of the evening.

Despite enjoying spells of possession and creating opportunities, Sweden struggled to convert their chances. Their frustrations deepened shortly before halftime when Gustaf Lagerbielke had a goal ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Any hopes of a Swedish comeback were effectively extinguished moments after the restart. Gakpo struck in the 47th minute from close range after latching onto a Dumfries assist, before adding his second of the match seven minutes later with a powerful effort from the edge of the area to make it 4-0.

Sweden eventually found a breakthrough in the 59th minute when Anthony Elanga finished smartly after being released by Isak, reducing the deficit to 4-1.

However, the Dutch remained firmly in control and continued to create opportunities. Their dominance was rewarded in the closing stages when substitute Memphis Depay provided an assist for Crysencio Summerville, who curled home a superb strike in the 89th minute to complete the rout.
