Portugal delivered a commanding statement of intent at the FIFA World Championship on Tuesday, thrashing Uzbekistan 5-0 in a one-sided Round Two encounter inspired by a clinical brace from veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 41-year-old forward once again demonstrated his enduring quality, scoring twice as Roberto Martinez’s side overwhelmed their opponents with a dominant attacking display that underlined their status as serious contenders in the tournament.

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the sixth minute, calmly converting after being set up by Joao Cancelo to give Portugal an early advantage. The goal settled the European giants, who controlled possession and dictated the tempo from the outset.

Portugal doubled their lead in the 17th minute through a superb free-kick from Nuno Mendes, whose curling effort from the edge of the area left Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvakhid Nematov with no chance.

Uzbekistan thought they had found a route back into the contest when Azizjon Ganiev struck from distance in the 29th minute, but celebrations were cut short after a VAR review ruled out the goal for a foul in the build-up.

The setback proved costly as Portugal extended their advantage before halftime. Bruno Fernandes threaded a precise pass into the box, allowing Ronaldo to slot home his second goal of the evening in the 39th minute and effectively put the match beyond Uzbekistan’s reach.

With a comfortable three-goal cushion, Portugal continued to dominate after the break. Their fourth goal arrived in unusual fashion when an unfortunate own goal by Uzbekistan goalkeeper Nematov compounded his side’s misery in the 60th minute.

Substitute Rafael Leao then completed the rout three minutes from time, producing a stunning strike into the top corner to cap an impressive team performance and seal a comprehensive 5-0 victory.

Beyond Ronaldo’s brace, Portugal impressed with their fluid attacking movement, defensive discipline and depth in quality, with Bruno Fernandes, Nuno Mendes and Rafael Leao all playing influential roles.

The emphatic win strengthens Portugal’s position in the competition and reinforces belief that the 2016 European champions possess the experience and firepower required to challenge for global honours.
