2027: Obasanjo, Kwankwaso meet behind closed doors in Kano

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has hosted Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso at his temporary residence in Kano State, in a meeting that has stirred fresh political interest ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, visited the former president on Thursday.
He was accompanied by the NDC governorship candidate in Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.
The visit was confirmed in a statement by Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan.
Hassan described the meeting as cordial but did not disclose the issues discussed during the closed-door engagement.
The silence over the details of the meeting has drawn attention because of the growing political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a post on X, Hassan said Kwankwaso paid a courtesy visit to Obasanjo, who was in Kano on an official assignment.
“His Excellency, Sen. KwankwasoRM, PhD, FNSE, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the NDC, last night paid a courtesy visit to elder statesman and former President of Nigeria, His Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, at his temporary residence in Kano,” he wrote.
“Former President Obasanjo is currently in Kano on an official assignment, and the visit provided an opportunity for warm exchanges and constructive discussions. Sen. Kwankwaso was accompanied by His Excellency Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, the NDC Governorship Candidate for Kano State.”
Although the purpose of the visit was not made public, the meeting has attracted political attention amid speculation over possible alignments before the next general elections.
Obasanjo and Kwankwaso share a longstanding political relationship.
Kwankwaso served as Minister of Defence during Obasanjo’s second term in office between 2003 and 2007.
The Kano meeting now places both men back in the political spotlight as conversations around 2027 continue to gather momentum.
