Quick Read

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has become the highest-scoring tournament in the competition's history, with 177 goals already scored before the tournament has even ended.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has become the highest-scoring tournament in the competition’s history, with 177 goals already scored before the tournament has even ended.

This means the current World Cup has surpassed the previous record of 172 goals set during the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

As a result, the 2026 edition is now officially the most productive World Cup since the competition began in 1930.

The achievement continues a trend of high-scoring World Cups in recent years. The 1998 World Cup in France produced 171 goals, a total that was matched by the 2014 tournament in Brazil. The 2018 World Cup in Russia recorded 169 goals, while Qatar 2022 raised the record to 172 goals.

Earlier World Cups generally produced fewer goals. The first tournament in Uruguay in 1930 ended with 70 goals, a figure repeated at the 1934 World Cup in Italy. The 1954 tournament in Switzerland became the first World Cup to record more than 100 goals, finishing with 140.

Other notable tournaments include Spain 1982 with 146 goals, the United States 1994 with 141, Korea/Japan 2002 with 161, Germany 2006 with 147, and South Africa 2010 with 145 goals.

With several matches still left to play, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to increase its goal tally further and strengthen its position as the highest-scoring tournament in World Cup history.
