Martinez faces big Ronaldo decision ahead of World Cup knockout
Quick Read
Whether Ronaldo starts or begins the game on the bench, all eyes will be on the Portuguese captain as he looks to help his country move one step closer to World Cup glory.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has remained tight-lipped over whether Cristiano Ronaldo will start in his side’s crucial Round of 32 clash against Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Portuguese manager addressed growing speculation surrounding Ronaldo’s role in the team after the veteran forward featured in all three of Portugal’s group-stage matches.
While Ronaldo managed to score twice during the group phase, both goals came in the victory over Uzbekistan.
As Portugal prepare for the knockout stages, questions have continued to emerge about whether the 41-year-old should retain his place in the starting lineup. Some football pundits and supporters have argued that Portugal may benefit from a more mobile attacking setup, claiming the team could play with greater freedom without relying heavily on the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Despite the debate, Martinez has made it clear that he still values Ronaldo’s contribution to the squad and believes the legendary striker remains an important figure both on and off the pitch.
Speaking ahead of the encounter with Croatia, the Portugal coach praised Ronaldo’s understanding of the game and his ability to influence matches even when he is not directly involved in scoring goals.
“Cristiano is used to being in the right place at the right time. He is very disciplined in his position, and he also creates space for his teammates,” Martinez said.
The former Belgium coach also rejected suggestions that Ronaldo’s age has become a concern, insisting that the Al-Nassr forward remains in excellent condition physically and mentally.
According to Martinez, Portugal’s technical crew closely monitors the performance levels of every player before making selection decisions, and Ronaldo is no exception.
“His physical and mental condition is not in question. We may need to make changes in the next match, but we base every decision on the information and data we have,” he added.
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time leading scorer and one of the most experienced players in the squad. His leadership and vast tournament experience are seen as major advantages as Portugal aim to make a deep run in the competition.
The upcoming showdown against Croatia is expected to be one of the most closely contested matches of the Round of 32. Both nations progressed from their respective groups and will be eager to secure a place in the last 16.
