No fewer than eight people lost their lives and 17 others were injured on Sunday in a road accident along the Funtua–Katsina highway in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Katsina Sector Command, said the crash occurred at about 1:32 p.m. at Layin Kukah on the busy highway.
A First Information Report released by the command’s Public Education Officer, DRC Shamsudeen Babajo, stated that the accident involved a Toyota Hiace commercial bus bearing registration number 14B 92 TR and an unregistered Bajaj tricycle.
According to the report, 25 people were involved in the crash.
“The crash involved a Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number 14B 92 TR and an unregistered Bajaj tricycle.
“The crash involved a total of 25 persons. Seventeen sustained varying degrees of injuries, while eight persons lost their lives.”
The FRSC attributed the accident to wrongful overtaking following preliminary findings.

The corps said it received a distress call at about 1:34 p.m., with its rescue team arriving at the scene around 2:04 p.m., recording a response time of 30 minutes.
Babajo explained that the operation was carried out jointly with the Community Watch Corps. The injured victims were taken to Bakori Comprehensive Hospital for treatment, while the deceased were initially moved to the same hospital before being transferred to the General Hospital, Funtua.
“The rescue team conducted the rescue operation in collaboration with the Community Watch Corps (C-Watch). The victims and the corpses were taken to Bakori Comprehensive Hospital for medical attention and further check-up, while the corpses were subsequently transferred to General Hospital, Funtua,” he said.
The FRSC urged motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and comply with traffic regulations, stressing that adherence to road safety rules remains essential in preventing avoidable crashes.
