Canada booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 in dramatic fashion after Stephen Eustaquio struck deep into stoppage time to seal a heartbreaking 1-0 victory over South Africa in a pulsating Round of 32 clash on Sunday.
Just when the contest appeared destined for extra time, Eustaquio pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the area in the second minute of added time, drilling a low effort beyond South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to silence the crowd and end the African side’s World Cup campaign.
South Africa battled courageously throughout the encounter and looked capable of taking the game beyond 90 minutes, but were ultimately undone by a moment of clinical finishing from the Canadian skipper.
Canada dominated much of the contest, creating the clearer scoring opportunities while forcing Williams into a string of outstanding saves that kept Bafana Bafana in the game for long spells.
The South African goalkeeper produced brilliant stops to deny Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi, Tajon Buchanan and Jonathan David, while Oswin Appollis came closest for Hugo Broos’ side with a powerful long-range effort that was brilliantly tipped away by Maxime Crepeau.
The match remained finely balanced as South Africa defended resolutely and threatened sporadically on the counterattack, with Appollis and Teboho Mokoena testing the Canadian defence.
As the game drifted into stoppage time and extra time appeared inevitable, Canada launched one final attack. After Jacob Shaffelburg’s cross was only partially cleared, the ball fell kindly to Eustaquio, who calmly rifled a low strike into the bottom corner to spark wild celebrations among the Canadian players and supporters.
The late winner shattered South Africa’s hopes of becoming the latest African nation to progress in the tournament, ending a spirited campaign in cruel fashion despite an organised defensive display.
Canada, meanwhile, advance to the Round of 16 brimming with confidence after surviving a stubborn South African challenge.
Jesse Marsch’s side will now face the winner of the Round of 32 clash between the Netherlands and Morocco as they continue their quest for a historic World Cup run.
