A couple has been arrested over the death of a teenage boy identified as Sadiq in the Kurmin-Mashi area of Kaduna metropolis, Kaduna State.
DSP Mansir Hassan, the spokesperson for Kaduna Police Command confirmed the arrest of the couple over the death of teenager in a statement.
According to the statement, the teenager died after couple who are his mother and stepfather subjected him to punishment over missing money.
Hassan said the incident occurred on Sunday night along Dahiru Road in Kurmin-Mashi.
The Kaduna police command said reports indicated that the boy was sent to withdraw money from a Point-of-Sale (PoS) operator before questions later arose over the transaction.
“The suspects are currently in police custody while investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the next line of action,” he said.
Residents of the area said the incident had generated concern within the community.
Some witnesses alleged that neighbours and community members attempted to intervene during the incident and appealed for restraint.
Others said efforts were also made to resolve the matter peacefully.
The residents expressed shock over the teenager’s death and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
Police authorities urged members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators to conclude their findings, assuring that appropriate action would be taken in line with the law.
